Why I’m Writing a Screenplay for my Niece
I’ve previously spoken about how much I love being an auntie — it’s one of the many joys of my life. I have a beautiful, adorable, sweet & talented 9 year old niece living in California. She moved there 20 months ago from Dublin with her parents. Her dad is an entreprenuer & CEO of a very successful environmental compliance start up company, SwiftComply. My sister is a full-time mom & dog lover. She runs a doggy ‘day care’ center from the comfort of their home. Essentially, she babysits dogs when their owners are away. The other family member is their golden retriever, Dexter.
I haven’t seen my niece since she came home to Ireland last May to make her First Holy Communion. That was a very special & memorable day as it was one of the rare occasions that both sides of the family were present. My family members at home keep up with all the news from California on WhatsApp. I look forward to seeing the latest photos & videos of my niece’s amazing life & all her achievements. She’s in the 3rd grade at school & loves drama, public speaking, hip hop dancing, softball, horse riding & swimming. She’s also taking science classes, something she wouldn’t have had the option of doing until secondary school (high school) in Ireland.
I’ve never attempted to write a screenplay before. I know it probably won’t get made into a movie, but I wanted to write it especially for my niece to enjoy. The story is inspired by her life in California. The main character is a bubbly girl aged 9, whose best friend is a dog. If it ever DID get made into a movie, I’d imagine it as a fun Disney movie that kids her age would enjoy watching.
When she eventually comes back to Ireland, I want my niece to read the script for my screenplay. Hopefully she’ll be reminded of the time she spent living in California, the friends she made & all the awesome places she visited.
Most of all I want her to know how much she is loved by her ‘cool’ auntie!
I can’t think of a better gift for an aunt to give her niece.
Thank you for reading!
