This is just a reflection of where society is at now. Most people prefer to have their noses stuck looking down at their smartphones instead of engaging in conversation with strangers in a queue (I’m guilty too!). They feel uncomfortable engaging in small talk with strangers. Usually it’s the older generation who make the effort to talk to others because fewer of them have smartphones.
